It’s always a good idea to give back to those around you. Contrary to popular belief, getting involved with your local community doesn’t require much of your time, effort, or even money, and it can be fun.
Small actions can yield significant results, and every way you can help out will increase the strength of your neighborhood, city, state, and even the country. And, these activities will be a welcome break from your everyday routine, job, or regular lifestyle.
If you are looking for a new and exciting way to give back, this post is for you. And if you’ve never done community service before, don’t worry; this post is also for you.
Regardless of the location, size, and demographic of the community you live in, you can definitely find an area that needs help. It’s a good idea to consider the specific needs of your location, though, to really maximize the benefits of the support you’ll contribute.
Without further ado, let’s get onto the
5 powerful ways to help out your community!
1. Volunteer at a food bank.
Did you know that food insecurity has increased over 200% since pre-pandemic times? Now more than ever, people need healthy nutrition, and not everyone has access to it. Consider spending a few hours sorting, distributing, and packing produce. Your actions will seriously go a long way.
2. Join a community clean-up.
If you live near a beach, help clean it up. I have done a few of these already, and clean-ups are actually so fun. You get to enjoy the beautiful morning haze and sounds of waves crashing as you and a group of others passionate about helping the environment pick up trash one by one. It’s a great way to see your service’s direct and immediate impact while also having significant benefits to the environment.
3. Serve the elderly.
Not only will they benefit from your help, but you can (and will) learn so much from them too. After all, all of that life experience leads to so much wisdom.
4. Identify a need & create a petition.
When it comes to petitioning, the topics are endless: healthcare, immigration, construction, technology, animal rights.
Is there no stop sign where you think there should be? Are there not enough recycling bins available? Is one of the monuments in your community sending the wrong message?
5. Donate clothes, books, toys, accessories, tech…(the list goes on!)
If you’re anything like me, you’ve definitely got some clutter around. Consider spending a day sorting through your stuff. It’s not only good for you to lessen the amount of “stuff” around you, but you’ll be providing critical resources to those in need. It’s a win-win!
Additional fun ideas:
- Volunteer at your local animal shelter.
- Write supportive letters and send them to children in the hospital.
- Mentor a child or teen.
- Aid your local church.
- Serve at a soup kitchen.
- Raise a service dog.
- Volunteer at a crisis line.
I hope this list got you pumped for community engagement! You may surprise yourself with how rewarding and fun it is to give back to your city and those around you. If you have a fun service activity that isn’t mentioned above, please share it with me below in a comment.
Most importantly, be safe, wear your mask, and have fun!
