Somehow, I’ve managed to lock down the basics of makeup application. I still have a long way to go in this regard (my amazing friends and sister generously offer to do my eyeliner and contour and eyeshadow whenever I beg them. I’m kidding.) (About the second part.)
Why not go ahead and share the products I use that have allowed me to finesse my way through the makeup world? It’s always fun to share makeup favorites, and you can purchase all of the products I use either at a local drugstore or on Amazon Prime! My makeup “routine” takes, in total, about 15 minutes, usually longer if SZA is playing in the background.
To reiterate, I tend to do the bare minimum and do not consider myself a “beauty guru” in the slightest! What I do know, however, has gotten me through many an occasion thus far. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! ”
Below you will find the 10 makeup products I use for my straightforward makeup routine.
Disclaimer: this post is not sponsored. All opinions are my very own.
1. Flawless Lumière Radiance-Perfecting Foundation by Laura Mercier
I wear the shade 2N1.5 BEIGE. I can’t count the number of times I’ve re-ordered this product on Amazon! (It lasts a while, but I love it so much.) I apply this with a (dry or wet) Beauty Blender, foundation brush, or sometimes clean fingers (if we’re honest).
2. Fit Me Liquid Concealer by Maybelline
I wear the shade L15 LIGHT and picked it up at the drug store. I apply this product on my under-eyes, T-zone, brow bone, and then anywhere else on my face where there are spots that I can cover up.
EDIT: A high-end alternative is this NARS concealer which I just found out my friend is obsessed with!
3. Smooth Finish Foundation Powder by Laura Mercier
I wear the shade 2C1 O4. Even though this is ‘foundation’ powder, it is light enough and not cakey. I still use it as a regular powder.
Be mindful to avoid any thick/unblended areas since it technically is a thicker powder. I also can’t count the re-orders of this product.
4. Hoola Bronzing Powder by Benefit Cosmetics
Ever since the YouTube “Beauty Guru” craze of this product forever ago, I have not branched out. Since it is a light powder, this product works great for those like me who do not know the specific ins and outs of contouring (draw the number 3?).
You can easily layer on more depending on the look you are going for, and truthfully, I find this product more straightforward to use than a liquid bronzer.
5. Powder Blush by Revlon®
This is shade 003. I bought this product at my local CVS. I love using a rose-y tint on my cheeks to give some color and warmth to the look.
EDIT #2: For a more high-end alternative, check out the NARS blushes that my friend highly recommends. She said its very pigmented and lasts a long time!
6. Boy Brow by Glossier
This. Product. Is. Incredible.
I’m not sure what it does to my brows, exactly, but there’s a slight brown tint to it as well as a brush to coat and enhance your brows evenly without using additional products. It takes so little time to use and makes such a big difference. Forever grateful to my roommate for showing me this product!
7. Better Than Sex Mascara by Too Faced
Sorry! I’m back to the beauty-guru 2010 YouTube era with this mascara. What can I say? If it works great, I’m keeping it. This mascara’s brush shape gives extra pizazz to your lashes. It is not waterproof and therefore easy to remove when washing your face with a cleanser.
8. Glow Kit by Anastasia Beverly Hills
Yes, yes, yes! I never forget to apply some of this sparkling magic; it makes me shine like a glazed donut, and I love the way it looks. I like to use it with my fingers, usually to the top outer parts of my cheekbone, brow bone, nose, and sometimes just above the center of my upper lip.
9. Matte Finish Long Lasting Setting Spray by Nyx
Setting spray is a necessity if you want the look to stay on for a while. Especially with the mask era that we are currently living in, it’s crucial to apply this to your makeup.
10. Glossiest Lip Gloss by Glossier
Another shoutout to my roommate for purchasing 2 of these (one for me to try out.) The shine of this thing is real, people, and the gloss rehydrates my lips so well. It’s a transparent color so that the natural color of your lips is enhanced, which I find very appealing.
My honorable mentions:
Sunscreen + Primer Broad-Spectrum SPF 30 by ZO® Skin Health by Zein Obagi MD
I like to use this Sunscreen+Primer after washing my face and before applying any makeup. It is smooth, slightly tinted, and dewy, giving the skin an excellent smooth foundation to start (pun intended).
Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner by Stila
This eyeliner is my roommate’s go-to and the one she uses to apply eyeliner on me generously. She has repurchased this product many times. I highly enjoy how long-lasting it is and the smoothness with which you can apply it.
Naked 3 Eyeshadow Palette by Urban Decay
It’s not often that I apply eyeshadow. But when I do (or when my friend does it for me), we like to use this palette that, again, was probably widespread in the 2010s.
Full-On Plumping Lip Polish by Buxom
This lip gloss, in any shade, works well to give your lips color, shine, and a little tingling plump. I like to use this because it’s fast to apply and adds to the overall look.
My tips for makeup hygiene:
The best product is healthy skin, of course. Here are a few reminders for maintaining the hygiene of your skin.
- Don’t forget to thoroughly remove your makeup before bed.
- Use clean hands and clean makeup brushes.
- Start with a fresh, clean face.
- Wash your makeup brushes 1x per week.
- Replace your products every so often.
- Wear sunscreen daily before applying makeup.
