Now more than ever, we are putting so much time and energy into everything but ourselves. But we can’t keep this up forever! Without a proper self care routine in place, one is bound to explode at some point or another. So please don’t take these tips lightly or make this anything but your top priority. After all, how can you take care of things if you aren’t cared for first?
First, to explain what self care is, let’s talk about what it isn’t.
Debunking popular myths: Self-care is…
1. An indulgence.
No. It means includes making mindful changes in patterns of thoughts and behaviors that do not contribute to your wellbeing.
Nope. When you make time for yourself and get sufficient rest & exercise, you feel more energetic and will be able to do more – for yourself as well as for those around you.
3. A one-time experience.
Wrong again. Looking after yourself is an ongoing practice in building resilience to face hardships and in preventing burnout.
False. Self-care does not require you to take out a huge chunk of time from your busy day.
Finally, with that said, I can move on to 7 of my favorite self-care activities. Feel free to try out some of the activities mentioned below the next time you have an hour, day, or weekend off!
7 ideas for self care:
1. Do a homemade face mask.
After washing your face, gather the ingredients, mix, and leave them on your face for 10-15 minutes before washing off. Your skin will feel rejuvenated, and your mind will feel more relaxed.
- Hydrating: honey + avocado + banana + yogurt
- Brightening: honey + baking soda + lemon juice + turmeric
- Anti-inflammatory: honey + matcha + coconut oil
If you’re looking for something more commercial, I recommend this complexion clearing mask.
2. Paint your nails.
Doing your nails is extremely relaxing and refreshing. Whether you are doing them yourself or going to a salon, this activity can be healing, and your hands will look great as a plus. You honestly feel like a new woman (or man) once you’ve finished painting them, chip-free, with that air of confidence and relief from the previous horror.
Although we’re in quarantine, there might be nail salons near you that are open with safety measures in practice. Check your Yelp app and perhaps call ahead.
3. Watch your favorite TV show.
If you need some suggestions, check out this article.
4. Go for a walk.
Even walking for as little as 30 minutes enormously boosts your overall mental and physical health. The fresh air, outdoor environment, and low-intensity aerobics will make you feel so good during and afterward.
5. Play a board game.
You can play online with your friends or go solo. Scrabble, chess, a puzzle…
6. Take a hot shower or bath.
For a bath: I recommend incorporating bath bombs (s/o to Lush), candles, a glass of Pinot, and some relaxing music.
For a shower: I recommend exfoliating, conditioning, singing, and repeating until relaxation kicks in.
7. Try out a new recipe.
So…what are you waiting for? It’s time to #treatyourself.
